Orangeville was the host site this weekend and the Sweet Oven Lady Kings U19 lacrosse squad split a pair of games and suffered their first loss of the season.

The Hamilton Bengals were Orillia’s first foe and the Lady Kings got off to a slow start as the upstart Bengals fought hard, holding Orillia to a slim 3-2 lead after the first quarter. After falling behind 2-0, Elle Waite would open the scoring for the Lady Kings, with Emma Torkoff adding a pair.

In the second quarter, Orillia would receive a hat-trick effort from the stick of Kristie Fisher and single markers from Amelia Obee and Isabella Cerpnjak to take an 8-4 lead into the half. Catherine Varley and Torkoff would round out the scoring, earning a final 10-5 victory. A valiant effort all over the field was performed by midfielders Bethany Marchant and Hannah Rudge by making contributions in the ground ball and transition game. Kayleigh Aitken earned the win in net and made key saves when tested early in the match.

Game 2 would see the Lady Kings battle against Kawartha for the first time this season and quite simply the local girls were humbled to the tune of a 13-4 loss.

The coaching staff, despite the loss, felt that the players and themselves can take away key situations throughout the match and work on some of the defensive errors and offensive opportunities to apply in the upcoming practices and games. Each player held their heads high throughout the entire match, applying the advice and guidance the coaches provided during play and at each quarter.

Again, Kayleigh Aitken was quite simply outstanding in net and deserved a better fate for her hard work and efforts. Also, Emma Torkoff continued to pace the Lady Kings’ offence, netting all four goals in the defeat, while Bethany Marchant added an assist in the game.

The Sweet Oven squad travels to Oshawa and hopes to get back in the win column with a pair of matches against the Guelph Regals and St. Catharines Athletics.

Note: Because Orillia is not a host site this year in Ontario Women’s Field Lacrosse play, the Sweet Oven U19 team has arranged an exhibition game for next Monday, June 20, against the Oshawa Lady Blue Knights in hopes of showcasing the rep game to our house-league players and parents, and in hopes of reinvigorating the sport and our local program because of the momentum lost because of COVID. The game will start at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the West Orillia Sports Complex after the final games of house-league play for the season.
