Local Channel Cats swimmer smashes five records in Montreal

Blythe Wieclawek also qualified for finals in all of her events and finished fourth in three events against some of Canada's top swimmers

Orillia Channel Cats Swim Club member Blythe Wieclawek, 17, recently competed at Canadian Junior and Senior Championships held in Montreal at the Olympic Park sports complex.

Wieclawek qualified for nationals in six individual events over the past season and participated in a time trial at the event in the 100-metre freestyle, making the national standard in that event as well.

Wieclawek broke five 15-and-over girls long-course club records in the 50-metre freestyle (26.96), 100-metre freestyle (58.86), 50-metre backstroke (30.64), 50-metre butterfly (27.39) and 100-metre butterfly (1:01.29).

She qualified for finals in all of her events, placing fourth in the 100-metre butterfly, 100-metre backstroke and 50-metre butterfly, eighth in the 50-metre freestyle and 15th in the 50- and 200-metre backstroke.

“I am very proud of Blythe’s dedication, work ethic and resiliency demonstrated over this past season,” says head coach Meredith Thompson-Edwards. “She has been listening to coach feedback, and works very hard to perfect her technique in order to continue to improve.”
