Local pickleball players strike gold at Toronto Cup tourney

Three local duos brought home gold medals and another duo earned a bronze medal at Toronto Cup Pickleball Tournament

Orillia pickleball players brought home multiple medals from the recent Toronto Cup Pickleball Tournament.

The event, the first in a series being held across Canada leading to the Canada Cup, was contested by players from Canada, the U.S.A., and Mexico.

This support and a significant audience reflected the growing popularity of this relatively new sport.

The games, referred to as the Toronto X Tournament, took place at Hotel X at Exhibition Place. Results for Orillia players are as follows:

Dion Wilson and Marilyn Berrys teamed up to win gold medals in the mixed doubles competition for those 19+ and 35+ at the 3.5 level.

Jeff and Michelle Steers also struck gold, earning top spot among mixed doubles for players aged 35+ at the 4.0 level.

In men's doubles action for players 19+ & 35+ (3.5 level), Dion Wilson and Mike Horne garnered gold medals.

Akos Tozer and Jeff Steers earned bronze medals in the men’s doubles competition for players 50+ at the 4.0 level.

The local pickleball group is very proud of their members’ achievements at this major tournament.

The sport is played locally at the YMCA and Rotary Place in the winter and at various outdoor courts in the summer. There are lessons and beginner times available. New players are always welcome.
