Mariposa gymnast is city's first provincial champ in 15 years

Sophie Hoy overcame injury that forced her to miss a year of competition; Dozens of local athletes shone at provincial competition

MARIPOSA GYMNASTICS CLUB

The gymnasts and coaches worked hard together throughout the qualifying season and the results are proof of this. Mariposa Gymnastics Club sent a total of 23 gymnasts to the level 3-5 Ontario Provincial Championships. Some outstanding achievements were accomplished.

Congratulations to Sophie Hoy who is the Level 3 age 12 Ontario Provincial Champion!

Sophie made a big comeback after an injury put her out of the sport all last year. Finishing in the top 3 at all of her qualifying competitions, she secured her place at the Championship competition held in Waterloo.

Sophie achieved an impressive 38.199 for her total overall score putting her in the first place position. On the events Sophie showed the judges that she was there to compete, placing first on vault, second on bars and beam, and 8th on floor. Not only did she manage to come out with some amazing scores, she also earned a special award for her amplitude on her leaps and jumps for beam. Sophie is Mariposa’s first provincial champion since 2004.

Billie Rouse, Rayne Noganosh, Maiya Krynicki, Lila Hill, Lily Coulson and Ali Cooper also competed in the level 3 category. These girls were up against the best in the province and for some it was their first experience at Provincial Championships.

In the 9-year-old age division, Rouse placed 16th on bars with a score of 9.2, Noganosh captured 6th place on bars with a 9.65. in the 10-year-old age division Krynicki placed 7th on floor with a score of 9.183 and Hill was 15th on vault with an 8.933. Coulson placed 7th on floor with a score of 9.4 and Cooper earned a bronze medal on balance beam with a score of 9.333 in the 14 years and older category.

Congratulations to all of our level 3 gymnasts.

In level 4 Jessica Noganosh, Autumn Prior and Brooke-Lynn May competed in the 11 year old division. These girls worked hard to achieve some personal bests.

In the 12-year-old division Addison Ayers, Maeghan Duck, Brynn Thurlow, Emma Hand, Rhiannon Wolf-Hambsch and Isabelle McPhee went out with confidence and showed the judges just how tough Mariposa Gymnasts can be.

Sacha Versace was our only competitior in the 13-year-old category and she managed to bring home a silver medal on vault as well as a special judges' award for body position and height and distance.

Emily Hamilton and Rianna Platt competed in the 14-year-old division and were up against some strong gymnasts. Hamilton took first place on bars with a very impressive score of 9.8 while Platt placed 7th on floor with a 9.2. Jordyn Thurlow finished her season off with a strong competition. Representing Mariposa Gymnastics at the Provincial Championships for the 3rd season in a row, Thurlow is an all-around athlete and an outstanding member of the team.,

The level 5 gymnasts, Savanna Benson and Jada Downs, worked hard all season and brought their A game to the Championship competition. Placing in the top 8 overall both girls were very happy with their results.

Congratulations to all Mariposa gymnasts. We look forward to a strong 2019/2020 competitive season.
