Mariposa wrestlers dominate at Canadian Championships

U19 female wrestlers also brought home medals

Eleven members of Orillia's Mariposa Wrestling Club traveled to compete in the U17/ U19 Canadian Championships in Fredericton, New Brunswick from April 5-7.

Local U17 male wrestlers Jack Scott (45 kg) and Logan Smith (55kg) dominated their opponents, winning their respective weight classes to stand atop the podium as gold medalists and Canadian champions. 

Local U19 female wrestler Leigha Smith brought home a silver medal, U17 male wrestler Duncan Blake won a bronze medal, Dom Rithchie finished 4th and Carson Bussieres finished 5th. 

Other Mariposa wrestlers included Cashius Aitken, Ian Stirling, Liam Warboys, Sam Cordery and Zarah Yglesias.  

On Sunday, April 7 many of the Mariposa wrestlers tested their throwing skills at the Greco-Roman Championship. Once again, Logan Smith found the top of the podium to capture gold. Smith was also awarded the U17 Greco Roman Outstanding Wrestler award. 

Duncan Blake and Leigha Smith both won gold in their weight classes to capture their second medals of the weekend. Zarah Yglesias won a silver medal, Carson Bussieres and Jack Scott finished fourth, Ian Stirling 6th, and Cashius Aitken 7th.

Team results saw the U17 Mariposa males winning the Greco Roman Title and finishing second for Freestyle.
