12th annual slo-pitch tournament features national men's and ladies' A championship; 'It's great for the family,' says organizer

Some of the country’s top slo-pitch players are in Orillia this weekend.

The 12th annual Northern Shootout tournament kicked off Friday afternoon at Tudhope Park.

It features the national men’s and ladies’ A championship, as well as provincial qualifiers and action taking place among nine other divisions.

Mike Borrelli, who chairs the tournament with Wayne Barr, encourages people to come to the park and check out the action, which runs until Sunday afternoon. It’s free to attend.

“Come out and watch the highest-level slo-pitch,” he said. “It’s social. It’s great for the family.”

Food and drink vendors will be at the park all weekend. Among them is the Coors Light Mobile Mountain. The large booth, with patio seating, was a staple at Toronto’s Jurassic Park during the NBA playoffs.

“They contacted me and asked if (they could set up at Tudhope Park) and we didn’t say no,” Borrelli said.

He thanked the city’s parks, recreation and culture department for their support of the tournament.
