ORILLIA CHANNEL CATS
The Orillia Channel Cats Swim Club recently attended the Barrie Aquafest Invitational Meet.
Thirty-four swimmers from Orillia were in attendance at East Bayfield Recreation Centre.
This competition has a championship meet format: Prelims are held in the morning for 13-and-over swimmers, then top-16 advance to finals in the evening.
The 12-and-under age group have timed final events in the afternoons.
"This meet always gets the swimmers fired up, and provides the opportunity to race at a finals session which makes it even more exciting,” said Cats head coach Meredith Thompson-Edwards.
“We had some 13-and-over swimmers make final for the first time, which was a great experience for them."
Five short course club records were broken. Blythe Wieclawek, 14, set new marks in 100 backstroke (1:05.50), 50 butterfly (28.92), 100 butterfly (1:04.67), 200 Individual Medley (2:27.40) and Indiana Abram, 12, set a new record in the 100 butterfly (1:13.18).
Wieclawek also won the 13/14 girls individual high point award for winning all of her events.
Wieclawek made the provincial standards in the 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and 200 Individual Medley and teammate Indiana Abram qualified for Provincial Festivals in the 100 metre butterfly.
“Our whole team did a great job following race plans and getting up and performing. All of our swimmers deserve a pat on the back,” said coach Tatum Haslem.
