Orillia Channel Cats swimmers shine at regionals

Athletes shatter club records, qualify for provincials

Forty swimmers from The Orillia Channel Cats Swim Club recently competed at Huronia SC Regionals held in Bracebridge.     

The Cats swam their way to eight club records, several personal best times and had swimmers qualify to compete at the provincials.   

Blythe Wieclawek set new club records in the 11/12 girls 50 freestyle (28.51), 100 freestyle (1:02.70), 100 backstroke (1:10.10) 200 backstroke (2:34.11); Hayley French 11/12 girls 50 butterfly (31.89), 100 butterfly (1:10.93) and 200 butterfly (2:42.49) and Flora Haslem set a new record in the 13/14 girls 1500 freestyle (19:25.58).      

Grier Kershaw (17) qualified for Provincial Championships in the 100 breaststroke and teammate Hughie Edwards (16) made his second provincial time in the 200 breaststroke as well as Owen Rosati (15) in the 200 backstroke.      

“We had a very successful meet, our swimmers raced their hearts out and gave it all they had,” said head coach Meredith Thompson-Edwards. “We could not be more proud of their efforts.”
