More than 80 teams in region for annual girls hockey tournament

The 23rd annual Orillia Hawks girls hockey tournament got underway Friday.

More than 80 teams are in the area this weekend to compete in the tournament at venues in Orillia, Barrie, Rama, Coldwater and Gravenhurst.

The Peterborough peewee squad got off to a promising start Friday at Rotary Place, winning their first game, against Ennismore, 5-2.

As Peterborough’s Savannah Mark, 12, headed out for a rest before her next game, she sang the praises of the venue and the people involved.

“I hope they keep having it at these nice facilities,” she said, adding there are some “really good refs this year.”

Her teammate, Anabelle Leclair, 12, was proud of the win, but also enjoyed the social aspect.

“I get to spend time with my team and have some bonding time,” she said. “It’s cool to see all the different players and teams.”

Action will continue Saturday and Sunday. For the full schedule, click here.
