It was a humbling weekend of action for the BMO Nesbitt Burns Orillia Lady Kings Senior team as they competed against the top two teams in Ontario Women’s Field Lacrosse association on Sunday.

Orillia actually gave 1st place Orangeville Northmen a scare as they dominated at times and outshot the Northmen overall but heroic netminding by Olivia Hoffman in the opposition net was a deciding factor in the 7-5 loss.

Orillia netminder Emily Van Kessel was equally up to the task at hand and would earn Orillia player of the game honours however a 4-2 deficit at the half was enough momentum for Orangeville to earn the hard fought win.

Kyra Meredith and Kiah Shanks would score midway in the 1st half for the Lady Kings to tie the game at 2, however, two late markers before the end of the half by Orangeville would give them a lead they would never surrender.

Teresa Mayo, Sarah Utting and Emily Arkell would only be able to match the Orangeville scoring in the 2nd half despite outshooting the opposition and playing aggressive defence led by Shannon O’Connor and Rachel Mochulla. Orangeville remains undefeated in OWFL play but the Lady Kings gained some confidence knowing they can keep pace the league leaders.

In the second contest of the day, the humbling part, as a shorthanded Lady Kings squad come up against an aggressive and tenacious Six Nations squad and never got out of the gate as Six Nations mounted a 7-1 lead after the ½ half of play and eventually winning 14-5.

Kyra Meredith managed to score a pair of goals for Orillia while Mayo, Utting & Shanks again scored markers in the loss. Camille Vibert and Kaitlin Van Kessel both played well at both ends of the field and earned praise from coaching staff.

Despite the two losses, Orillia still maintains a 3rd place position in the 11 team league and enter the final weekend of regular season play matching up against Oakville and Six Nations II in Oshawa next weekend. Provincial playdowns will be the following weekend in Brampton and Orillia hopes to maintain positive momentum after next weekends action.
