Monday night was opening night for the 2018 Orillia Lady Kings Field Lacrosse House League program.

More than 130 players will play on teams starting with the U8 team for those under eight right up to the age of 15. On Monday, those players, their volunteer coaches, parents, volunteers and sponsors filled the artificial turf field at the West Orillia Sports Complex.

Players met their coaches, received their team T-shirts and then gathered together for the first time. They later gathered for a massive group photo and were treated to an inspirational speech from former Orillia Lady Kings player Annie Lloyd.

Lloyd started as a youngster in the house league program, went on to play in the rep program and also starred for the Orillia Secondary School team that was among the best in the province. After entertaining scholarship offers from south of the border, Lloyd opted to go to Queen's University, where she plays varsity women’s field lacrosse.

Lloyd talked to the youngsters about her journey, the opportunities the sport provided and then encouraged all the players to have fun and enjoy the sport in fair play. Following Lloyd’s presentation, house league convenor Shannon O’Connor and Mardi McLaughlin addressed the players and parents.

This year’s house league program kicks off May 7; the season runs through to June 25 when playoff action will determine champions in the four different age levels.
