The Orillia Lakers are offering a 10-week indoor training opportunity with accredited coaches.

Training pods will consist of up to 18 athletes of similar skill level, who will meet once a week for 80 minutes. As Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) restrictions allow only “non-contact” practices at this time, the focus will be on individual fundamental skills and physical development.

All training will be closely supervised to ensure that all current safety protocols are strictly adhered to.

Please note that registration for the program opened today at noon and will close at noon on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020. To register for the Pod training program, visit the Orillia Lakers website http://orillialakers.com/page.php?page_id=123093

Pods will be divided into four levels of experience:

  • Junior Lakers (Jr) - U7 to U9 - This is an introductory group for 6 to 8 year olds, many of whom have never played basketball before. The focus for our youngest athletes is to develop a love for the game while teaching basic fundamental skills which will be the basis for their future success on the basketball court.  Skills such as footwork, dribbling, passing, layups and shooting will be introduced in a fun and positive setting.
  • Fundamental (Fun) - U10 - U13 rep and U10 to U15 house league - This is a group of young athletes who are in the initiation or acquisition stage of skill development.  They may be new to basketball or may have had some organized basketball experience. The emphasis for this group will be to teach and build on the basic fundamental basketball skills such as footwork, passing, ball handling, right and left hand layups and shooting.
  • Advanced (Adv) - U12 - U16 rep - This is a group of athletes in the consolidation phase of fundamental skill development. They will have basketball experience and will be looking to refine their basic skills and start developing advanced skills.
  • Elite (Eli) - U15 - U19 rep - This group of athletes have strong basketball experience and are in the consolidation phase of advanced skills. The focus for these athletes will be on refining advanced skills such as eurosteps, step-backs, non-fundamental finishes, etc.

As the training is non-contact, there will be no competition or defence played in any pod training at this time.

The primary determining factor when selecting the appropriate level is the athlete’s individual skills regardless of age and physical development. Each level will be divided into male and female groups if the number of registrants is sufficient.

The Orillia Lakers provide youth basketball opportunities to the greater Orillia area. As an organization that understands the benefits of organized sports for youth, including physical activity, confidence building, leadership and many more, the Lakers are committed to providing basketball opportunities in a safe environment.

The Orillia Lakers will be strictly following all federal, provincial and local government guidelines and all recommendations made by the Public Health Unit. All public health and government regulations take precedence over any club regulations.

If you need assistance in determining which group is most appropriate or have any questions regarding the program please contact Ted Dongelmans at [email protected].
