Kyle and Melanie Newman have been racing motorcycles for over a decade. Despite only one person being the motorcycle pilot, it is very much a team sport. Last year they had some great support from local businesses, and going into the 2023 season, they've put together another fantastic team.

GryphonMoto, located on Royce Avenue, has been paramount in keeping the riders safe both on the track and the street with their protective gear. Conveniently, their gear is available to the public at Orillia Motorsports on Sundial Drive. Orillia Motorsports has also been supporting the team for several years, helping to keep their bikes running and ready for the next race.

Morton Metals, on West Street, is continuing its support for another year. They are always a great resource when you need to build or repair anything metal related. Last year, UCA Branding on Patterson Rd in Barrie installed a completely custom-designed vinyl wrap on Melanie's bike.

When Kyle and Melanie aren't actively racing to the checkered flag, you can find them teaching future riders at Georgian College in the M1 Exit licensing course. They also instruct at the track with Racer5, teaching riders of all levels how to push their bikes to the limit in a safe and controlled environment and learn the necessary skills to go racing.

Last year was a season of learning for Melanie, hopping aboard a new bike and making her national debut with the Canadian Superbike Championship. Despite having two crashes on her first race weekend out with the SOAR series, the team got the bike fixed, and she completed all seven rounds of racing. Now that the bike gremlins are all sorted out, she's looking forward to battling for the championship in 2023.

Kyle had a more successful season aboard his superbike, coming home with second place in the Pro Open Sprint class and fourth in the Pro Superbike class. Kyle also spent many weekends riding the local SCORRA trails on his dirt bike, and competing with Offroad Ontario in their Enduro racing series, coming away with the Intermediate B championship. For 2023, he will again compete on his superbike and dirt bike.

If you'd like to follow along the team's journey, you can find them on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. If you want to join the team and support their 2023 racing efforts, please reach out on any of the previously mentioned platforms or via e-mail at [email protected].
