Orillia Royals open season with lopsided road triumph

Junior squad crushed Mansfield 15-2; Orillia hosts its home opener Sunday night at Tudhope Park

The Orillia Royals Juniors hit a home run in their season opener.

The local squad was firing on all cylinders offensively, crushing the defending champion Mansfield Cubs 15-2 to kick off their North Dufferin Baseball League season.

Scott Adams threw a no-hitter through four innings for the Royals in the road contest. The starter struck out 10 batters and dominated.

Brayden MacEwen came on in relief and had two strikeouts before Ian Leggault came on to pitch the final two frames, allowing just one hit while striking out a pair.

Tyler Gysbers paced the offence with four hits, including a pair of doubles. Ethan Murdy contributed three hits for the Royals.

Murdy was also solid behind the plate; he did not allow any passed balls.

"Team chemistry was very positive," said coach MIke Provenzano. "They all rallied behind each other."

They will hope to make it back-to-back wins Sunday when Orillia has its home opener at the Jerry Udell field at Tudhope Park. The Royals will play a return engagement with Mansfield in an 8 p.m. contest under the lights.

Orillia was supposed to play their first home game on Thursday night, but that contest against Ivy was rained out.
