The letter “O” would seem to be a favourite in the alphabet for the Orillia Meridian Credit Union Peewee 1 Kings.

After a tournament victory in “O”rillia, a hard-fought trip to the finals in “O”shawa, the peewee Kings kept their winning ways alive in “O”ttawa.

The peewee Kings won all five games over the weekend, once again using a strong defensive commitment, and a powerful offence to outscore their opponents 45-14 in the tournament. End result, a second straight championship banner from the Ray Broadworth Tournament in the nation’s capital.

After a long commute to Ottawa, the Meridian Kings began the weekend with a strong showing Friday evening, handling the North Shore Kodiaks 10-2. The opponents from Quebec could not handle the Kings offence, with Spencer Shropshire and Ethan Hardy firing two (2) goals each. Single goals went to Zach Clarke, Devun Colebrook, Jack Hedges, Jack Davidson, Evan Gliddon and Wilson Mackey. Zach Clarke led all Kings in assists with four helpers; other assists went to Shropshire (2), Colebrook, Mackey, and Hardy.

Day 2 of the week end tournament would see the Meridian Kings face Mimico and Gloucester. The Kings did not disappoint, outscoring both opponents 22-1 for the day.

It started with a 14-1 victory over Mimico. Orillia goals came from Clarke (3), Colebrook (2), Gliddon (2), Mackey, Daniel Slemin, Scott Barkley, Ben La Hay, Carson King, Davidson and Shropshire.

Game No. 2 on Saturday was another strong defensive effort versus Gloucester as the Orillia team recorded an 8-0 victory. The offence was led by Evan Gliddon, Spencer Shropshire and Jack Davidson with two goals each. Single goals went to Wilson Mackey and Devun Colebrook. The Kings had great goaltending for the day from the tandem of Wesley Brain and Evan Liscoumb, allowing a single goal for the day, an amazing total of three in the first two days of the tournament.

Sunday would prove to be a different day for the peewee Kings. In the morning semi-final, the team would face Mimico, looking to avenge their lopsided loss from Saturday. The Mimico team used good defence and an outstanding performance from their goaltender to keep the game close, knotted at 4-4 with under a minute to play.

In the final minute, Carson King came out of the penalty box, got the ball, split the defence, and scored the game winner to close out a hard-fought battle. The last-second victory allowed the Kings to challenge for the tournament championship. Other goal scorers in the semi final victory: Devun Colebrook (2), Scott Barkley, and Zach Clarke. Semi final assists went to Ethan Hardy, Zach Clarke, Devun Colebrook, and Ben La Hay.

The tournament final pitted Cornwall #1 and the Kings. Both teams play an up-tempo game with good defence and discipline. The final saw only six minutes in penalties per side, and lots of ball movement.

The Meridian Credit Union Kings came away with an 8-7 triumph, and another tournament victory. Leading the offence in the finals: Devun Colebrook (3), Wilson Mackey (2), and single goals went to Evan Gliddon, Jack Davidson, and Cole Eckstein. Finals assist went to Gliddon (3), Shropshire (2). Single assists went to Colebrook, Clarke, and La Hay.

The players would like to thank the families that travelled and cheered for the weekend, and, as always, the coaches and management who volunteer countless hours.
