Over the past weekend, the Orillia Paperweight Kings were kept busy playing on their home turf against three teams from across southern Ontario. The Boyd Balkwill Memorial Tournament honours a founding member of the Orillia lacrosse community and focuses on teamwork, fun and love of the sport.

Friday afternoon had the Kings travelling to the Rama MASK arena to take on the Barrie Bombers. This was a rematch for these two teams, and Barrie came out strong. Orillia's Ben Anderson scored three, with Preston Grimoldby contributed two and Ethan Viherjoki added one. Even with a strong defensive play, the Kings came up on the other end of the 6-7 loss.

Saturday had the team travelling to the Oro arena in the early afternoon and then playing at Rotary Place for their evening game.

The team from Whitby was an even match for our Paperweight Kings. Excellent defence, teamwork and solid passing allowed the team to earn a hard-fought 6-5 win. Goals were scored by Tyson Hawke and Ben Anderson. Kash Cosco stood out in net with some impressive saves.

At Rotary, for their evening game, the Kings took on the Newmarket team and dominated the floor. In the 11-2 win, Hartley Russell shone in net for the first time. Goals were scored by Keldon Campbell (2), Ben Anderson (4), Preston Grimoldby (2), Levon Hayes (2) and Devon Russell.

The final game on Sunday was a rematch against the team from Whitby. Knowing that this was going to be an even tougher fight, the Kings played with heart and perseverance.

Unfortunately, the Whitby team was ready and went on to win the game 5-0. The team play wouldn’t have been possible without the determination shown by Jacob Bat, Jaxon Snider, Dustin Springstead, Holden Spurgeon, Brock Caven, and Ben Almeida.

The team has been focusing on passing the ball, holding strong defensively and ripping those hard and fast shots. This level of dedication, learning and fostering the love of the game couldn’t be possible without the incredible coaching staff of Andrew Hawke, Brock Robertson, Zach Morris, Dean Carney and Daryl Bat.

The team would like to send a special shout out to the team manager, Allison Campbell who keeps everyone informed and ready to go. Thanks to the coordinators for the tournament and to the fantastic referees who make the games possible! Go Kings!
