Powerful Jaguars overwhelm Twin Lakes in GBSSA semi-final

'I'm proud of how we fought ... and played with a ton of grit and intensity,' said Twin Lakes coach

It was a tough ending for some of the senior boys' basketball players from Twin Lakes Secondary School who played their final basketball game for their school on Tuesday night.

The Thunderbirds had a flawless regular season, finishing in first place atop the Simcoe County Athletic Association (SCAA) standings and went on to win the SCAA title just a week ago.

However, in the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association semi-final against St. Joseph’s Catholic High School from Barrie, they were no match for their southern rivals who routed every team in the Catholic School Athletics of Simcoe County league, winning all six games in lopsided fashion.

With just under six minutes to go in the first half Tuesday, pop the Thunderbirds had managed to score just three points against the Jaguars and trailed 22-3. Going into the room at half time, the Thunderbirds were staring at a 25-point deficit.

Despite being down by an insurmountable score, the Thunderbirds kept playing with the heart and determination that they would exhibit in a one-possession game.

That made Thunderbirds head coach Andrew Corry proud.

“I’m proud of how we fought the whole time and played with a ton of grit and intensity,” said Corry. “Our guys fought hard and we've got to be proud of that.”

Thunderbirds captain and Russian native Vadim Boshnyak finished the game as one of the leading scorers for his team with just five points.

Boshnyak said his two years with the squad will always be a special memory for him.

“I’ll never forget winning the SCAA championship last week, and all the good times we had in tournaments,” Boshnyak reflected.

Liam Fitzroy also netted five points in his final game as a Thunderbird.

Fitzroy returned to the team this year as a Grade 12B, and has been a part of the basketball program for five years.

Fitzroy’s message to the next wave of Twin Lakes basketball talent is all about enjoying the moment.

“I would tell the juniors coming up to senior, and next year's rookies to work hard, enjoy the time with your teammates, and don’t forget to take lots of shots,” said Fitzroy after Tuesday night's defeat.

The final score in Tuesday's contest was 69-25 for St. Joe's.
