The region's AAA hockey program has suspended all hockey practices and games due to concerns about the COVID-19 virus that was declared a pandemic earlier this week.

"We are just taking precautions to protect our players, coaches and parents and the community of Rama," said Roger Crandell, the president of the North Central Predators organization. "It's better to be safe than sorry."

Crandell said Rama has decided to suspend all hockey games and practices at its arena, the Rama MASK, which serves as the Predators' headquarters.

"They are disinfecting the whole facility as a precaution," said Crandell, who met with staff at the arena earlier today.

He said there are "zero concerns" that any player or official has contracted the coronavirus, stressing the suspension is so maintenance staff "can do their due diligence."

Earlier today, the first case of COVID-19 in Simcoe County was confirmed in Barrie; the man had recently returned from a trip to Europe.

The AAA Predators organization is in the midst of playoffs. Four of the association's eight teams are involved in playoff series.

Crandell said activity has been suspended for three days and will be re-evaluated Sunday.
