Several Channel Cats shatter club standards

Blythe Wieclawek broke club records in the 50-M backstroke and 100-M backstroke

The Orillia Channel Cats Swim Club competed at the North York Aquatic Club Long Course Invitational in Markham as well as the Jeno Tihanyi Long Course Regional Championships in Sudbury.     

Both meets were held in an Olympic-sized 50 metre pool. At the Markham event, Blythe Wieclawek, 13, broke two club records in the 50-metre backstroke (33.71) and 100-metre backstroke (1:10.44).      

Channel Cat swimmers had a lot of personal best times and a few qualified for Long Course Regionals including: Jackson Denne, Katie Heckendorn, Adair Wieclawek, Isabella Holmgren, Hannah Kennedy and Sarah Sneyd.    

Other swimmers in attendance included: Hughie Edwards, Peyton Nie, Hayden Nie, Grier Kershaw, Marit kershaw, Declan Allin, Donovan Allin, Kaitlyn Allin, Paige Hannan, Chloe Smith ,Meghan Wilson, Ariel McGee, Flora Haslem, Alex Rainville, Mathieu Rainville, Tristan Sekleski, Olivia LePage, Chilyn Fenton, Zach Moczkodan, Ava Holly Elliott, Brooklyn Paddon, Blythe Wieclawek, Meagan Mackenzie, Nathaniel Sneyd, Peter Sneyd, Jack Gordon, Anna Holton, Kait Madden, Carly Widmer, Alexander Baillie, Anna Baillie, Evan Wagner, Owen Wagner, Lillian Partridge, Ava Holmgren, Emily Gordon, Matthew Gordon, Meghan Rogers, Owen Rosati, Esmee Rosati, Holly McCool, Owen McCool, Megan Widmer, Evangeline Cooke, Larissa Cooke and Hayley French.    

Results from the Jeno Tihanyi Long Course Regional Championships held in Sudbury include: 79 top-eight finishes contributed by the 42 swimmers from Orillia which is the highest number in history to compete at the regional championship.

“The time standards were changed this season which made some of the age groups more difficult to qualify and we were still able to increase our number of qualifiers from last season. We are very happy with our swimmers' results this year,” said Cats Head Coach Meredith Thompson-Edwards.    

Four more club records were broken, Blythe Wieclawek, 200 backstroke (2:35.68), Chilyn Fenton, 16, 400 freestyle (4:51.00) and 1,500 freestyle (19:10.63) and Maggie May Smith, 19, 100 backstroke (1:09.02).     

Swimmers who competed include: Tosh Aggarwal, Ava Hunter, Tess Mackenzie, Meagan Mackenzie, Zach Moczkodan, Flora Haslem, Nic Rainville, Alex Rainville, Mathieu Rainville, Hayley French, Katie Heckendorn, Olivia LePage, Meghan Wilson, Anna Holton, Jack Gordon, Peyton Nie, Hayden Nie, Megan Widmer, Carly Widmer, Grier Kershaw, Marit Kershaw, Sarah Sneyd, Evan Wagner, Chloe Smith, Esmee Rosati, Owen Rosati , Hannah Kennedy, Jackson Denne, Ariel McGee, Isabella Holmgren, Ava Holmgren, Adair Wieclawek, Holly McCool, Owen McCool, Evangeline Cooke, Rachel Carr,Tristan Sekleski and Hughie Edwards.       

The Orillia Channel Cats are now preparing for the last meets of the season including the Collingwood Indoor/Outdoor Meet and Age Group Provincials/AA Provincials being held later this month.
