Orillia Secondary School is hoping disc golf is a hit.
The school offered the sport, as well as ultimate Frisbee, Tuesday during Try Day. It received funding to purchase the necessary equipment, and students tried their hand at the two sports throughout the day.
“It’s encouraging lifelong, healthy, active learning,” said teacher Mike Tutty.
It made sense to offer disc golf, as there is a course in Homewood Park and it’s possible one will be set up at Tudhope Park.
“We’re trying to promote stuff that’s in the community already,” Tutty said, adding disc golf is an activity for all ages. “It’s something people can do with their grandchildren.”
Depending on the interest shown by students, the sports could eventually be offered regularly at the school.
“More importantly, it’s letting the kids know there’s a lot to do in the community,” Tutty said.
