The Orillia Suns Nova U18 girls ended their 2017-2018 season on a successful note, capturing the silver medal this past weekend at the Ontario Volleyball Association provincial championship in Waterloo.

It was a tough first day of competition for the Suns who lost all three matches (Thundercats 2-1, Durham Attack 2-0 and Niagara Rapids 2-0) by close scores. All three matches were exciting and could have gone either way.

On the second day the girls rebounded extremely well and won two of the three matches, defeating South County 2-1, Stratford 2-0 before losing a very close match to Lakeside 25-23, 25-23.

On day three the pressure was on as teams had to win to continue to play. The Suns Nova team started off strong with a convincing 2-0 win over Kingston. Their next match was a little tougher, as they faced the hometown Waterloo Tigers. Great play and team energy prevailed as the Orillia team came out on top 2-1.

With a semi-final match coming up the girls put on their game faces and defeated the Waterdown Raiders 2-1, sending them to the gold-medal game.

The gold medal game started off favourably for the Suns as we defeated Georgetown 25-11 in the first set. However, a resilient Georgetown team bounced back to take set two 25-15. Set three saw both of these very tired teams battle back and forth, point for point and the end result was a Georgetown win of 15-13.

The ladies are to be congratulated on a successful season. They worked hard at practices to develop their skills further and this came out in the championship tournament. Best of luck as they take a break and then prepare for the next season.
