Twin Lakes athletes ski to several medals at OFSAA

The school finished an impressive fourth overall in the team standings at the provincial Nordic championship this week

Twin Lakes Secondary School skiers proved their mettle, winning several medals at the provincial high school cross-country ski championship this week.

The school's senior boys team claimed the bronze medal in distance races at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations nordic skiing championships this week at Lakefield College School near Peterborough, helping the Thunderbirds from Orillia to a fourth-place finish overall in the province.

Erik Vurma was sixth, Sullivan Macdonald 14th, Nathaniel Sneyd 29th, and Brogan Long 46th out of 126 skiers. Rein Keppo was the alternate on the team.

Both MacDonald, in fourth for high school senior boys, and Erik Vurma, in fifth for open senior boys, were recognized on the podium for their individual results.

In senior girls competition, Anna Jaklova won the silver medal and Elle Waite skiied to the bronze medal. The girls' side ended up fifth overall; other team members included Kaiya Robinson-Miller, Danielle Irwin and Kylie Carrick.

In the relay races on Friday, the senior boys easily qualified for the final, ending up third. Macdonald had an outstanding first leg and the anchor, Vurma, fought hard to the end, missing the silver medal by 0.1 of a second. The senior girls also qualified for the final and finished seventh.

Twin Lakes juniors included Oliver Avery, Lachlan Sharpe and Molly Hazel.
