Win streak snapped at worst possible time for Orillia Lakers

Major midget girls rally to finish second in eight-team Ontario Basketball League's 'A' division championship tournament

Competing in the Ontario Basketball League “A” Division championship weekend, the Legion Br. 34 Lakers suffered their first loss of the season to the eventual provincial champs, the Advantage Titans.

In their opening game of the championship weekend in Burlington, the major midget girls ran into a hot Advantage Titan team, whom took an early lead and never looked back beating the Lakers 63-39.

The Lakers could not get anything to go their way this game shooting 0 for 15 from the three-point line and only counting one fast break basket throughout the game. Scoring for Orillia in the loss were Lilja Toland with 12 points, Emma Thomson (8), Hennessy Langner (6), Madison McLaughlin (4), Lauryn Buchan (3), Isabela Fleguel (2), Zoe Peeters (2) and Mya Erskine and Lauren Murphy with one apiece.

In their second game on Saturday the Lakers were up against the Oxford Attack. The girls came out flat in this game still reeling from their loss to the Titans, and fell behind by seven points in the first quarter which they could never make up and fell to the Attack at the end 41-34.

Emma Thomson led scoring for the Lakers with eight points. Also contributing in the loss were Lauryn Buchan (7), Isabela Fleguel (6), Hennessy Langner (5), Mya Erskine (5), Lauren Murphy (2) and Zoe Peeters (1).

On Sunday, with a second-place finish on the line for Ontario Basketball League, the Lakers were up against London CYO Lynx. The Lakers prevailed in the back and forth contest 45-43. '

Hennessy Langner led the way with 12 points, followed by Ashley Schryer with 8, Isabela Fleguel (6), Mya Erskine (5), Emma Thomson (5), Zoe Peeters (4), Lauryn Buchan (3) and Taylor Betchold-Coon (2).

In their last game of the championship and second place finish in the league on the line, the Br. 34 Girls were up against the York North Avengers. The parents of both teams enjoyed this exciting back and forth game with no team leading by more than four points, until the last quarter where the Orillia Lakers pulled ahead at the end to earn a 58-49 win. '

With this victory Orillia claimed second place in the eight-team Ontario Basketball League “A” division. Great accomplishment ladies, all your hard work and effort is recognized by coach, parents and competing teams.

Hennessy Langner led the team this game in scoring 18 points. Other scores for the game were Isabela Fleguel (11), Mya Erskine (10), Lauryn Buchan (6), Zoe Peeters (5), Ashley Schryer (4), Lauren Murphy (2) and Emma Thomson (2).

The U16 Legion Br. 34 girls next action will be in Orillia Saturday, April 27 at Twin Lakes Secondary School, when they host Lindsay Wildcats at 10 a.m. and Motion Lady Ballers at 1 p.m. in exhibition action!
