As cities across Ontario and around the world are taking steps to install additional bike lanes and implement car-free zones, SustainMobility (a non-profit organization) is adding one more reason to help keep spirits high this spring with its annual Bike Month Ontario campaign and a grand prize draw that will have you cycling outdoors all June long!
Ontarians are invited to get active, cycle often, and track their impact on the free Active Switch online tool (www.activeswitch.ca) from June 1 to 30, 2020, for a chance to win a $500 Sport Chek gift card (prize provided by SustainMobility). With no limits set on the number of prize draw entries a participant can earn, remember to log online every time you ride and be automatically entered into the grand prize draw. “These have been challenging times for everyone," says Glenn Gumuka, Executive Director at SustainMobility, “but as we see fewer cars on our roads, it is encouraging to see positive changes in the way we choose to get around. I am thrilled to see cities reconfigure and/or close streets and repurpose traffic lanes to give cyclists and pedestrians safe open spaces to enjoy while maintaining physical distancing.”
Promoting active transportation has always been a top priority for SustainMobility and that is why the non-profit organization developed the Commute Ontario (www.commuteontario.ca) program in 2018, thanks to a “Grow” grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).
“Commute Ontario is a turn-key program complete with tools and annual campaigns which promote active and sustainable transportation,” Gumulka explains. “Thanks to the OTF grant, we are able offer Commute Ontario free-of-charge to municipalities, residents, workplaces and post-secondary institutions across the province.”
Commute Ontario has set a three-year goal of reducing 4-million Kg of GHG’s as well as 20-million vehicle kilometres travelled province-wide with the help and commitment of Ontario’s municipalities, residents, workplace and campuses alike. To date, 15 municipalities and over 98 workplaces and postsecondary institutions have signed-up with Commute Ontario.
