Reporting of the daily Simcoe-Muskoka COVID-19 cases has become a mainstay of the public consciousness over the past year.

However, if cases continue trending down as they have over the past few weeks, the health unit may slow reporting of case counts by the end of the summer.

“We are looking at reducing the frequency of these (briefings), and looking at the potential for that to happen by the end of the summer,” Dr. Charles Gardner told reporters during the weekly COVID-19 media briefing on Wednesday afternoon. “If we look week-over-week, we continue in a very strong downward trend of cases. We’re very much moving in the right direction.”

“It will all depend on what actually happens,” he added.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported nine new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths today (June 16).

There are 135 active cases in the region.

There are 22 people from Simcoe County and one person from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19, and there have been no new hospitalizations since yesterday's report.

To date, 377,308 Simcoe-Muskoka residents (62.4 per cent of the population) region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, and 73,409 people (12.1 per cent of the population) have also received a second dose.

According to the health unit, 15 per cent of the region's adult population (aged 18 and over) have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, and another 58 per cent have received one dose. The remaining 27 per cent is unvaccinated.

In regards to the Delta COVID-19 variant (B 1.617), there are currently 15 cases in Simcoe-Muskoka.
