Health unit reports 106 new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka today, none in Midland

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 106 new COVID-19 cases and one death in today's update (April 23).

According to the local health unit, a Collingwood woman was between 65 and 79 years old and died on April 22 after contracting COVID-19.

There are 1,149 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 2,741 variant cases confirmed to date, with 739 of those cases still active.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 9,824 cases of COVID-19 with 8,031 of those cases recovered and 219 cases ending in death. 

There are 45 people from Simcoe County and two people from Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes eight new hospitalizations since yesterday. 

To date, 159,780 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of a vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 25 per cent of the region's population. 

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified): 

  • Severn (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case was community-acquired.
  • Tiny (1): One youth under 18 years old.  
  • Penetanguishene (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case was community-acquired.
  • Orillia (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old.
  • Oro-Medonte (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Collingwood (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.
  • Wasaga Beach (4): One person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases were community-acquired, and one is linked to close contact. 
  • Clearview (5): Two people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. One case is linked to travel, one to close contact, and three were community-acquired.
  • Barrie (36): Eight youth under 18 years old, 19 people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, six people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Five cases are linked to close contact, four were community-acquired, and one was outbreak-related. 
  • Springwater (2): One youth under 18 and one person between 35 and 44 years old.
  • Innisfil (12): Three youth under 18 years old, four people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. Four cases are linked to close contact and one was community-acquired.
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (24): Six youth under 18 years old, eight people between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 35 and 44 years old, five people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Sven cases are linked to close contact, and six are attributed to community transmission. 
  • Essa (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case was community-acquired. 
  • New Tecumseth (11): One youth under 18 years old, five people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, two people between 45 and 64 years old, one person between 65 and 79 years old, and one person over 79 years old. Two cases are outbreak-related and two were community-acquired.
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old.
  • There is are four new cases in Muskoka, including three from Bracebridge and one from Huntsville.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on April 23.
