It's been over 50 years since the Beatles travelled to India to stay at the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, an experience that forever altered the group and led to the writing of 40 songs.

Those songs continue to speak to music lovers today, and some titles — Long, Long, Long, I'm So Tired, and even Cry Baby Cry — might well speak to the collective experience of a global pandemic. Indeed, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da is a particularly iconic song from this era.

But The Beatles in India, a brand new documentary, takes viewers back to 1968, offering vivid first-hand accounts and over 40 never-before-seen photographs. Lakehead University has paired this with an interactive lecture with musicologist Dr. Mike Daley, who promises to not only unpack the history, but play some of the songs as well.

As we close out the first month of 2021, Linda Rodenburg, Lakehead's Director of Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning, hopes that people might take the time to connect with others and learn something new.

"I think we are all learning how important it is to connect with others and learn new things. It helps combat social isolation while we stay at home," says Rodenburg, adding that the event is $40 per household.

It includes a link to the documentary as well as the live lecture/concert with Daley on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 4 p.m.
