While life is a bit different at the Midland OSPCA branch these days, one of its important fundraisers is still a go.

Cupcakes aren’t cancelled, but National Cupcake Day will look different this year as the nationwide fundraiser goes virtual in support of the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society, as well as participating SPCAs, humane societies and rescue groups across Canada.

To keep people safe during COVID-19, the Ontario SPCA Midland & District Animal Centre is asking supporters to raise funds for animals in need in their community by baking a difference at home in support of the annual cupcake decorating contest.

“National Cupcake Day is the sweetest day of the year, and we need your help to support vulnerable animals across Canada,” says Caytlynn Croisier, Manager, Ontario SPCA Midland & District Animal Centre. “We’re challenging you to a bake off, so pre-heat those ovens and get ready to show off your cupcake decorating talents.”

Robin Elliott, community development coordinator at the Midland Animal Centre, said that since the shelter is considered an essential service, they're still open to assist animals in the community.

"What this means is that we are not open to the public, however are facilitating limited contact adoptions, surrenders and follow ups with foster families by appointment only," Elliott said, adding that they do not have a timeline for fully reopening, but will continue to follow guidelines set out by the province and public health officials.

As well, Elliott said that anyone interested in adopting can click here to see the full process, as well all of the animals that are available.

"If the nearest animal centre doesn’t come up when you check for locations, it simply means that they don’t have anyone at that time. But they should check regularly, as we do update the site on a regular basis."

To take part in National Cupcake Day, meanwhile, click here to register, raise funds and submit a photo of your cupcake creation for a chance to win some great prizes

The cupcake with the most votes in each of the four categories wins, so participants are encouraged to ask their family and friends to visit the event's official website site before Feb. 22 to vote for your creation and make a donation to your online personal fundraising page.

The Ontario SPCA and participating SPCAs, humane societies and rescue groups are charitable organizations that rely on the generosity of donors to change the lives of vulnerable animals. By taking part in National Cupcake Day and raising funds for the participating animal organization of your choice, you are providing urgently needed care and shelter for homeless animals.
