The numbers of people being seen at Midland's COVID-19 assessment centre has been steadily declining.

Since it opened on March 25, the centre located at 845 King Street has seen 130 area residents.

But Georgian Bay General Hospital spokesperson Jennifer Moore said the numbers have steadily gone down over the eight days since opening.

"We still have only two confirmed cases through the assessment centre," she said, adding they're both self-isolating to recover.

The two-tiered process at the assessment centre includes screening for all patients. Upon screening, Moore said, the decision is made to swab the patient for testing. The centre is now swabbing nearly all the patients it sees, she added, albeit the numbers have decreased over time.

It started out with 28 people being screened and only 11 being swabbed on day one. The number of people screened quickly dropped to nine on day two, however, the number of swabs administered remained the same.

As screening numbers dwindled, swabs being administered remained steadily above 10, with 14 people being swabbed Monday, April 6.

"The Assessment Centre is staffed by GBGH staff on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays," said Moore. "We had over 65 GBGH nurses volunteer to work at the centre."

Waypoint staff takes over on Mondays, she added, and Chigamik Community Health Centre also helps out positioning staff as greeters and to handle admin matters on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Moore added that currently the assessment centre is fully supplied as far as personal protection equipment and test kits are concerned.

An earlier release from the hospital says please note a screening tool will always be used to determine if you should be seen at the centre. The assessment centre booking desk is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and can be reached at (705) 529-1025.

Call Telehealth at 1-866-797-0000 to be assessed by a nurse at the assessment centre. The nurse can make a clinical determination if a test is required. If a test is required, you will be swabbed and the sample sent for processing. You will then be given instructions on how to self-isolate at home.
