Penetanguishene woman dies from COVID-19, four new local cases in region today

Three new cases are in Midland with two related to an outbreak

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 89 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths in today's update (April 14).

The deaths reported include a man over 79 years old who died on April 13, a woman over 79 years old who died on April 10 and a woman between 45 and 64 years old who died on April 9. All three were residents of Simcoe County, including one from Penetanguishene , one from Wasaga Beach and one from Innisfil.

There are 971 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 1,984 variant cases confirmed to date, with 494 of those cases still active. The region's medical officer of health, Dr. Charles Gardner, said 96 per cent of the new cases coming to the health unit this week are variant strains.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 8,937 cases of COVID-19 with 7,601 of those cases recovered and 215 cases ending in death. 

There are 41 people from Simcoe County and one person from Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes five new hospitalizations since yesterday. 

To date, 121,752 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of a vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 19.5 per cent of the region's population. 

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified): 

  • Midland (3): One person between 18 and 34 years old and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are outbreak-related. 
  • Tay (1): One person between 65 and 79 years old.
  • Collingwood (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is linked to close contact. 
  • Wasaga Beach (4): Two people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. 
  • Clearview (2): Two youth under 18 years old.
  • Barrie (19): Nine people between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 35 and 44 years old, and six people between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact, and three are attributed to community transmission.
  • Springwater (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 35 and 44 years old. 
  • Innisfil (17): Seven youth under 18 years old, four people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, four people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are attributed to community transmission, and one is linked to close contact.
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (15): Two youth under 18 years old, four people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and seven people between 45 and 64 years old, and one case between 65 and 79 years old. One case is attributed to community transmission. 
  • Orillia (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old whose case is outbreak-related.
  • Oro-Medonte (3): One person between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact. 
  • Severn (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Essa (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old.
  • New Tecumseth (7): Five people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are attributed to community transmission and one is linked to close contact.
  • There are 11 new cases in Muskoka, including five in Huntsville, three in Gravenhurst, one in Bracebridge and two in Muskoka Lakes.
