Trades industry looking for a few good women

'A lot of women don’t think about the industry as a way to make a living, but it is a great way to do so,' says Tamarco's Julie Harris

The Barrie Construction Association’s Women in Construction group is preparing for its second annual bursary for female students entering into post-secondary education in the 2021-22 school year with a focus on those entering into the trades.

Tamarco office manager Julie Harris tells MidlandToday the need for more women in trades is important.

“This is a great way to continue the push to get women into trades. A lot of women don’t think about the industry as a way to make a living, but it is a great way to do so,” Harris said.

Harris has been involved in the trades industry for almost 20 years and hopes to see more women join this year.

“At the moment, we are able to offer a $500 bursary to at least three women,” Harris said. “We are doing some more fundraising  and hoping to be able to offer it to four or five women.”

Last year, there were approximately 10 submissions for the contest.

Those interested in applying can send an email to [email protected] and should include a short essay about themselves, what career path they have chosen and why, and why they believe women in the trades is important.

The submission deadline is April 23 and selected recipients will be notified in May, with the presentation date on May 25.

Participants are asked to include the best way to be contacted.

The bursary is open to residents of Simcoe County only.
