Peacefully passed away at Spencer House, Orillia on Wednesday September 2, 2020 at the age of 95. Sonya, beloved wife of the late Joe (Jacobus)(1986). Loving mother of Janet & Cameron McKenzie, Joyce & Ben van den Broek and June & Dean Morgan. Proud Oma of Kevin (Sarah), Ryan (Nikki), Eric (Sarah), Brittany (Kurtis), Ashley (Scott), Joe/Jolene, Travis (Jessica), Jackie (Gonzalo) and Rebecca. Great Oma of Jayden, Ariel, Jordyn, Landon, Grayson, Finley, Nicholas and Beckham. Dear sister of Cobie, Anna and the late Elizabeth (Bill), Johannas, Bronno (Sybil), Harm, John, Elzo (Gretta) and Yvonne (Hank). Survived by sisters in law Ida Mary and Roelfke. Sister in law of the late Gerry & Jacoba, Hendrik & Dirkje. Lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Sonya traveled to Florida for 17 winters where she learned to paint, do wood carvings and later in life to crochet. She loved to garden and play euchre. Always smiling, laughing, telling stories or listening to one being told, Sonya had a great way of making others feel welcome, heard and loved. She enjoyed humming or singing along with music whether it be a song on the radio, in church, or just a tune in her head. Always busy creating, whether it be painting a picture, crocheting granny squares or making wood carvings, Sonya loved creating and didn't care if she made a beautiful work of art to gift to her children or grandchildren, or if what she made was only good enough to just keep her hands busy. She absolutely loved the process of creating and being creative and she was proud to know that her family held pieces of her artwork in their homes. Her grandchildren remember her life advice of "you should always listen to your heart" and they adored seeing her thrive over the years even after the loss of her husband Joe. Her kind heart and loving, positive spirit are and will be remembered fondly by those who knew and loved her.  Many special thanks to all of the wonderful caring staff at Spencer House, Orillia; they enabled us to enjoy another 4years with our mom. The family also gives special thanks to the staff at Helping Hands, Dr. Collins and the dedicated staff at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital Dialysis Unit. Visitation will be held at the Mundell Funeral Home, 79 West St N., Orillia on Tuesday September 8, 2020 from 12 noon until time of service at 1 o'clock in the chapel and will be live streamed at  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGLIu9-qr2lbuRi0n62A4SA/featured?view_as=subscriber. Public Health Regulations restrict the number of guests within the funeral home. Please be patient, observe physical distancing and face coverings are required inside the building. Interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Dunnville on Wednesday September 9, 2020 at 1 PM. If desired, memorial donations to the Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital Dialysis Unit, Helping Hands or Spencer House would be appreciated by the family. Messages of condolence are welcomed.
