Arrest made in recent robberies

On Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018 the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) made an arrest in relation to the robberies at both the Scotiabank and Mac's Convenience Store earlier this month. 

On Friday, Jan. 5, 2018 Orillia OPP members responded to a report of a Robbery at the Scotiabank branch located at 3305 Monarch Drive in the City of Orillia. At approximately 3:43 pm A lone male entered the branch stated he had a firearm. The male left the bank in an unknown direction with cash. 

On Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018 the Orillia OPP responded to a robbery at Mac's Convenience Store located on Memorial Avenue in the City of Orillia. At approximately 10:30 pm a lone male entered the Mac's Convenience. The male wanted cash and indicated he had a firearm. After a brief encounter the male left the store on foot last seen on Barrie Road. 

The Orillia OPP Crime Unit was called in to investigate both robberies. As a result of the swift and thorough investigation undertaken by Orillia OPP members and Orillia OPP Crime Unit the male responsible for both robberies was arrested and charged with numerous offences. 

On Jan. 9, 2018 members of the Orillia Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) arrested 23-year-old Lucas Campbell of Orillia. He is charged with the following offences: 

  • Robbery with a Weapon Contrary to Section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code. 
  • Robbery with a Weapon Contrary to Section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code. 
  • Carrying Concealed Weapon Contrary to Section 90 of the Criminal Code. 
  • Fail to Comply with an Officer in Charge Undertaking Contrary to Section 145(5.1) of the Criminal Code. 
  • Fail to Comply with an Officer in Charge Undertaking Contrary to Section 145(5.1) of the Criminal Code. 
  • Resist Peace Officer Contrary to Section 129 of the Criminal Code. 

On Jan. 9, 2018 the accused was held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia and remanded into custody until his next appearance on Jan. 16, 2018

On Jan. 9, 2018 Orillia OPP members along with Orillia Crime Unit, Central Region Emergency Response Unit (ERT) and CSCU executed a search warrant at a Front Street address in the City of Orillia. As a result of the warrant police seized evidence in relation to the robberies. 

The Orillia OPP would like to thank the public for their continued assistance and support in matters such as these. With the help of the public the Orillia OPP was able to bring the accused person into custody to answer to his charges.
