OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt reports from the scene of a fatal crash on Highway 9 in Caledon that claimed the life of a 56-year-old Barrie man on Monday morning.

A 56-year-old Barrie man was killed and a 21-year-old Wasaga Beach man was taken to hospital with "relatively minor injuries" following a head-on crash Monday morning in Caledon.

The crash happened shortly before 8 a.m. on Highway 9 between Townline Road and the 10th Concession.

The two-vehicle collision involved a pickup truck and a cargo van.

"The pickup truck was travelling eastbound when, for some reason, (it) veered over into the westbound lanes where it collided with that van, essentially head-on," OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said at the scene.

The Barrie man who was driving the cargo van was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the pickup was taken to a nearby hospital.

"Very sad outcome here," Schmidt said.

Police continue to investigate and a traffic collision reconstructionist team is on scene.

Schmidt said he expected the highway to remain closed for "several more hours" while police complete their on-scene investigation.
