Barrie police investigating 'absolutely scary' incident

Man in serious condition after what police say 'appears' to have been a shooting at The Foundry where many Georgian College students live

A man is in serious, but non-life-threatening condition in a Toronto-area trauma centre following a suspected shooting early this morning in Barrie.

City police were called to the Foundry on Georgian Drive just before 4 a.m.

Alex Hannivan, a Foundry resident, was called by a friend shortly afterward.

“I was asleep and woke up. It’s absolutely scary,” he said of the shooting. “I’m ready to move out.”

Hannivan said police were knocking on doors afterward, making sure others were safe.

Police say there have been no arrests made in connection with the incident.

“I believe it’s an isolated incident and we don’t believe there’s any risk to public safety at this point,” said Barrie Police Service corporate communications co-ordinator Jennett Mays.

She was asked if Saturday morning’s incident was a shooting.

“It appears that way,” she said. “He appears to be in serious, but looks to be in non-life-threatening (condition).”

Foundry Georgian, located at 310 Georgian Dr., is a townhome complex that includes five buildings, each containing several units with as many as five people living in them.

While many students live there, Georgian College has no official affiliation with the Foundry.

City police have been called there numerous times during the last year.
