Driver charged with impaired after crash sends 7 to hospital

RAMARA - The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently investigating a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 12 in Ramara Township.

On Dec. 31, 2018, Orillia OPP was dispatched to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 12 near Balsam Road. Police arrived on the scene where Ramara Fire Department and County of Simcoe Paramedic Services (CSPS) were tending to injured persons. CSPS transported seven people to an Orillia area hospital for treatment. One of those people, a 19-year-old male, was then transported to a Toronto area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The OPP Central Region Technical Collision Investigation Unit (TCI) along with a collision reconstructionist were called in to assist with the investigation.

Initial investigation led officers to have reasonable grounds to charge 35-year-old Daniel McCarthy of Barrie with five counts of operation causing bodily harm contrary to Section 320.14(2) of the Criminal Code, and five counts of operation while impaired contrary to Section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.

The accused was released on a Promise to Appear for Feb. 12, 2019 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia.
