Driver who fled crash scene on Hwy. 400 in Barrie arrested in Orillia: OPP

Gravenhurst man faces numerous charges following incident Friday afternoon after police located 'highly damaged vehicle'

Provincial police say a man was arrested in Orillia on Friday afternoon after fleeing the scene of a crash on Highway 400 in Barrie. 

Shortly after 4 p.m., Friday, Orillia OPP officers were notified that a vehicle had been in a collision on Highway 400 in Barrie and that the driver had continued northbound in a "highly damaged vehicle," according to provincial police. 

An officer located and stopped the suspect vehicle on Highway 11 near Line 15 of Oro-Medonte Township. 

While speaking with the driver, police say the officer was given cause to begin an impaired driving investigation. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further investigation.

Michael Copeland, 39, of Gravenhurst, has been charged with operation of a vehicle while impaired by alcohol/drugs, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to remain at the scene of a collision, and possession of a Schedule I substance (opioid).

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear on Sept. 21, 2021, at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia.
