Duo flee police, nearly injuring officer, face multiple charges

This is the second time the pair have been charged; Orillia man is still at large and is wanted on charges stemming from two recent incidents

On Oct. 13, 2020, members of the Muskoka Community Street Crime (CSCU) of the Bracebridge Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed two individuals in a vehicle who were violating terms of their release.

Officers stopped the vehicle in the Township of Severn, however, the driver of the vehicle drove off, forcing an officer to jump out of the vehicle's path. On Oct. 19, 2020, the driver who fled turned herself in to the Orillia OPP.

The passenger was also involved in an incident in Orillia on Oct. 8, 2020, where he fled from police in his vehicle. An officer attempted to stop the motor vehicle on Regent Street. The driver drove up on a curb to evade police and fled. He is still outstanding, and is wanted on multiple charges.  

Justine Docherty, 28 years of age, of Bracebridge, Ont., is charged with:

  • Fail to comply with undertaking S. 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC);
  • Flight from peace officer S. 320.17 CC;
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle S. 320.13(1) CC; and
  • Assault a peace officer with a weapon S. 270.01(1)(a) CC.

Kaleb Saastamoinen, 25 years of age, of Orillia, Ont., is charged with:

  • Oct. 13, 2020
    • Flight from peace officer S. 320.17 CC;
    • Three counts of failure to comply with release order S. 145(5)(a) CC; and
    • Two counts of failure to comply with probation order S. 733.1(1) CC.
  • Oct. 8, 2020
    • Failure to comply with probation order S. 733.1(1) CC;
    • Two counts of failure to comply with release order S. 145(5)(a) CC;
    • Operation while prohibited S. 320.18(1)(a) CC;
    • Flight from peace officer S. 320.17 CC; and
    • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle S. 320.13(1) CC.

Docherty was held for bail via video at the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on October 20, 2020.

Saastamoinen remains outstanding and is wanted on all charges listed above.
