UPDATE: Man dead after car collides with horse on Davis Drive

The driver struck a horse on the road, then hit a culvert, causing him to be ejected from his car, York Regional Police say

UPDATE: Nov. 11, 1 p.m.: York Regional Police have identified the victim of a collision with a horse early this morning on Davis Drive as a Newmarket resident.

The 60-year-old driver of a Toyota Corolla struck a horse on the road and then hit a culvert, causing him to be ejected from his vehicle, police said. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Several horses had escaped from a nearby farm onto Davis, police said, one of which was found deceased at the scene. The remaining horses have been collected and returned to the farm.

A 60-year-old man is dead after a collision involving a car and a horse on Davis Drive West overnight, York Regional Police said. 

At about 2:40 a.m. Nov. 11, the York Regional Police duty office alerted residents via Twitter that there were 20 to 30 horses on the roadway on Davis near Bathurst Street and advised drivers to avoid the area. 

At 2:45 a.m. the call came in for a collision involving a car that struck a horse, a police officer from YRP said. The 60-year-old male driver of the vehicle is deceased.  

Davis remains closed between Dufferin Street and Keele Street due to the collision. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
