Man facing charges following vehicle theft in Gravenhurst

Someone called the police about a potentially impaired driver who was operating the vehicle reported stolen earlier in that day

GRAVENHURST - A Gravenhurst man is facing several charges following a stolen vehicle complaint. 

On March 19 at 7:15 a.m., police say they received a call about a stolen vehicle after a person realized their work vehicle was stolen when they were out on foot undertaking maintenance work on Muskoka Road South in Gravenhurst.

A short time later, someone reported to the police a potentially impaired driver who was operating the same stolen vehicle at a service station south on Highway 11 South, south of Gravenhurst, police say. The vehicle hit an unattended car in the parking lot before continuing to drive south on Highway 11.

Police later located and stopped the stolen vehicle near the area of Picard Lane. 

The driver, 34-year-old Brandon Tonna of Gravenhurst, has been charged with:

  • Theft of motor vehicle CC 333.1,
  • Flight from peace officer CC 320.15(1),
  • Operation while impaired CC 320.14(1)(a),
  • Failure to comply with demand CC 320.15(1)
  • Fraud under $5,000 CC 380(1)(b) 

Tonna is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on May 9, police say.
