Man flees police custody

On Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at approximately 9:30 a.m., officers from the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were dealing with a male who was in custody when he ran from the detachment. Officers immediately chased the male on foot and a short time later, it was determined that he was believed to be somewhere within the Orillia City Hall.

As a precautionary measure, City Hall was immediate placed into a lockdown condition while members of the OPP Central Region Emergency Response Team, who were assisted by a Canine Team and officers from the Orillia OPP Community Street Crime Unit conducted a search of the building.

A short time later, the male was located and taken into custody without incident and the lockdown was lifted.

Richard Asselstine of Orillia, Ontario, who is 26 years old is currently facing a charge of escape lawful custody in addition to the original charges for which he was being processed for earlier this morning. He is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie, Ontario for a bail hearing later today.

The circumstances that led up to this matter are currently under investigation at this time and no further details will be provided.
