Man's best friend? Dog tips off police about impaired driver

Local senior charged with impaired after showing signs of alcohol consumption while trying to retrieve dog that fled from his vehicle while stopped by OPP

At 8:30 p.m. on May 25, 2020, a member of the Ontario Provincial Police Southern Georgian Bay Detachment was on general patrol and noticed a pick-up truck with a broken headlight travelling on Fuller Avenue in the Town of Midland.

The officer stopped the vehicle to inform the driver and while speaking with him, the driver's dog escaped from the vehicle. While assisting the owner in retrieving the dog, the officer noticed that he was showing signs of alcohol consumption.

The officer investigated further, resulting in the arrest of the male who was transported to detachment. The dog was retrieved without injury.

As a result of the investigation, Kenneth Asselin, 60 years of Midland has been charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada;

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The driver's licence of the accused has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days. The accused was released from police custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Aug. 27, 2020.
