Newmarket man charged with careless driving after collision with OPP vehicle

The collision occurred at the scene of earlier multiple collisions on an icy patch on Highway 404 Sunday morning

A 43-year-old man from Newmarket faces several charges after an Ontario Provincial Police officer was injured in a collision on Highway 404 at Bloomington Road Sunday morning.

The man is charged with failing to slow down and move over, careless driving and possession of drugs, according to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

The collision occurred following earlier multiple collisions on the icy highway overpass at about 9 a.m. Sunday, with first responders and tow trucks on the scene.

The OPP officer, who was sitting in his vehicle with its lights flashing at the time of the collision, was treated and released from hospital, as was the driver who is now facing charges.

By law, drivers are required to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles and tow trucks with their emergency lights activated.

"This could have easily turned into a tragedy, please watch for stopped emergency and first responders vehicles with their lights flashing," Schmidt said on Twitter.
