Orillia OPP are seeking the public's help following the drug overdose of a man at a home on Nottawasaga Street Monday.

"As we know there are lots of overdoses (and) drug-related incidents happening in our town and everywhere across North America," said Orillia OPP Const. Martin Hill. "(In this case), a relatively young man passed away. We just want to make sure we're taking every step we can to ensure foul play is ruled out."

Hill could not say if the death was related to fentanyl, which is becoming increasingly prevalent.

"We don't know if it’s fentanyl specifically or other things at play," he said, noting the coroner will perform an autopsy. However, he said toxicology reports can take several months.

"If the chief coroner notices anything suspicious, he will let police know and a criminal investigation will take place," said Hill. "We are taking these types of incidents very seriously."

Hill said the man, who was in his early 50s, died at about 1:30 Monday afternoon.

The investigation is being conducted by the Orillia Crime Unit and Central Region Forensic Identification Services (FIS) under the direction of Detective Staff Sergeant Serge Acay of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner.

If anyone has information regarding the circumstances surrounding this death they are encouraged to contact the Orillia OPP at 705-326-3536 or 1-888-310-1122.
