OPP nab impaired, wrong-way driver after Highway 11 pursuit

Police were investigating report of wrong-way driver in Gravenhurst when incident occurred

BRACEBRIDGE - Bracebridge Ontario Provincial Police officers were investigating a report of a wrong way driver on Highway 11 South in Gravenhurst on Saturday May 25, 2019 at 11 p.m. and in order to protect public safety, had the highway closed in that area.

An unrelated vehicle approached the road closure travelling southbound, noticed the police cruiser, stopped and turned to drive away, proceeding north in the southbound lanes.

The suspect vehicle was confronted by another police officer traveling southbound and stopped temporarily before driving through the grass median and continuing north, now in the northbound lanes. Police engaged in a short pursuit before the driver pulled over and was subsequently arrested.

Police have charged 42-year-old Michael Gillroy of no fixed address with:

  • Dangerous operation of a vehicle CC 320.13(1)
  • Operation while impaired CC 320.14(1)(a)
  • Over 80 CC 320.14(1)(b)
  • Flight from peace officer CC 320.17

He will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on June 25, 2019 to answer to his charges.
