An Orillia man has died following an incident on Canada Day.

At about 8:20 p.m. July 1, there was an altercation between a man and a group of people on bicycles in the parking lot of The Metro on Front Street.

“After the original altercation, the lone male sustained what police believe to be an accidental injury and was transported to Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital by Simcoe Paramedic Services, then transferred to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto,” police said in a press release issued Friday afternoon.

The 32-year-old Orillia man died of his injuries, but police could not say when his death occurred.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, said Orillia OPP Const. Ted Dongelmans.

“We have spoken to all the involved parties,” he said. “What happened after the initial altercation is what caused the injuries.”

The cause of the injuries is part of the ongoing investigation, he said.

It is not believed the deceased knew the other people involved in the altercation, Dongelmans said, but he added it was an “isolated incident” and there is no threat to public safety.

When asked why police had not released information about the incident sooner, he said he was “not in a position to comment on it.”

Efforts to reach family and friends of the deceased, whose name has not been released by OPP, have not yet been successful.
