An Orillia man smashed through the locked front door of a downtown drug store last night and stole a quantity of prescription medication.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m., Orillia OPP officers received a call from an alarm company reporting the alarm had been activated at the Mississaga Street business. The OPP has a policy of not naming businesses targeted by crime.

Officers arrived to find the front door smashed and, after a search, discovered the culprit had fled the scene.

Store staff were summoned and determined that quantities of prescription drugs had been stolen.

Using video surveillance footage, the officers were able to identify the suspect who was later located and arrested.

Jason Hendrick, 37, of Orillia has been charged with the following offences:

  • Break, enter a place - commit indictable offence
  • Theft under $5000
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - other drugs
  • Fail to comply with probation order

Hendrick is to appear in Barrie court today.
