The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are sharing some tips for business owners to help protect their businesses in Orillia OPP patrolled communities.

Over the past few weeks people have been spending more time at home and several businesses in the Orillia area are closed due to unforeseen circumstances.

Unfortunately there is a contingent of society who will take advantage of the misfortune of others.

Here are some tips to help keep your business secure now and for the future.

  • Make sure exterior lights are in good working order, consider a timer.
  • Make sure doors and gates are locked when closing up, utilize a deadbolt.
  • Make sure security equipment such as cameras and security systems are in good working order and would assist investigators if needed.
  • If possible, deposit cash daily or put floats somewhere criminals wouldn't look and keep cash drawers open.
  • For large ticket items record the serial numbers, make, model and any other identifiable information.
  • Keep jewelry or other valuables locked in a safe that is anchored to the floor.
  • If possible drive by the business when it is closed.
  • Maintain your property including moving garbage, picking up mail or other maintenance as required.
  • Consult with your security and insurance providers for suggestions as it pertains to your business.
  • Visit www.opp.ca and query the SafeGuard page for more information including videos.

Keeping your business safe from criminals can seem like a task, however, it is an important part of owning a business. Many crimes can be prevented through diligence and keeping with routine to ensure the safety of people and security of property.
