A 47-year-old Oro-Medonte Township man was killed in a plane crash earlier today.

Members of the Southern Georgian Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched at 12:39 p.m. to a report of a plane crash into the waters of Georgian Bay in the area of Pinery Point, Georgian Bay Township, across the bay from Victoria Harbour.

After receiving the 911 call from an area resident, the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Marine Unit was dispatched and arrived on the scene "shortly" after the crash.

The officers recovered and transported the pilot, the plane's lone occupant, to a waiting County of Simcoe Paramedic Services Unit.

Sadly, the pilot was pronounced deceased despite the efforts of emergency services members.

"It's just an unfortunate incident," said Southern Georgian Bay OPP Const. David Hobson.

He said the small ultralight aircraft sank at the crash scene.

Hobson was not able to provide any other details.

He said Transport Canada has been contacted to assist in the ongoing investigation.
