On June 12th 2021 at 5:30 p.m., The Huronia West OPP Marine Unit along with OPP Aviation Services, Wasaga Fire and Ontario Parks staff responded to a possible drowning in front of Beach Area 2 in Wasaga Beach.

Initial reports were that a male was last seen on a floatation toy a few hundred metres from shore. Friends became concerned when the floatation toy was observed without the male on it. Friends of the male called 911 and a collaborative search and rescue effort ensued. The search lasted approx. two hours

Unfortunately the search came to a grim conclusion when a body was located under the surface by the OPP Helicopter. The body was located a short distance from where the male was last seen.

A 22-year-old male from Brampton was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. His name is being withheld until next of kin notifications have been made.

The investigation is on-going but information suggests the deceased was a very weak swimmer and not wearing a personal flotation device.
